I decided to take my son to see the Drake Relays Parade this year. I never went to the parade while attending Drake due to it happening downtown Des Moines and being rather early in the morning for a college student. But my son and I needed to get out and he enjoys parades; the combination of music, candy and political stickers is enough to excite any 3-year-old.
We had a wonderful time. My son enjoyed eating 75 Tootsie Rolls, and I enjoyed seeing Rep. Leonard Boswell riding a motorcycle around staff holding a “Boswell for Congress” sign. I was surprised at the number drill teams (i.e. dancers and drummers) from outside Des Moines. I don’t recall seeing a single music group from Des Moines (with the exception of the Drake pep band). Most of the performers were from Kansas City with a few from areas outside Des Moines and one from Lincoln, NE. The lowlight was the Blue Bunny folks handing out bomb-pops on a chilly 40-degree morning – they should have canceled after they read the weather report.
